About my handmade Futons
Futon is a word borrowed from the Japanese, which means natural fibre mattress. Traditional Japanese Futons are made from 100 percent pure cotton and are quite firm, giving a good supportive nights sleep by moulding to your body shape. We handmade all our futons here in Caloun to accompany our hand made solid wood bed and sofa bed frames.
At At Zen Natural beds I make the lower maintenance requiring, cotton foam core futon.
The cotton foam core futon is far more popular these days. That is because optimally, you would get it outside into the sun every 6 to 8 weeks. However if you can not, as the cotton settles and firms, the foam core will still let it have some give. We create two types of foam core futon mattresses. They are a 100% natural organic latex core and a range with a synthetic foam core.
Our all natural futon, has a five centimetre certified 100% natural and organic latex foam core. There is 5cm of 100% cotton either side, and then 3cm of Australian wool. It is then sealed in a 100% organic cotton herringbone mattress ticking cover.
In the synthetic foam core, we insert a seven centimetre thick sheet of, high quality Australian Made Dunlop Brand, high density foam, between either 5 cm’s or seven cm’s of pure Australian cotton per side.
With foam core futons, the sunning period is only required if possible every couple of months, as the foam gives a layer of cushioning, even though the cotton is slightly compacted. They are also much lighter in weight than an old style all cotton.
Our organic futon mattresses are very popular and we hand make each one for our valued clients, at a very fair price.
